is the news really this desperate …

… that they have to lie or hide the truth to get ratings??

Yahoo! News told me this headline this morning –
“Officials confront first US death from swine flu”
Here’s the first paragraph, which you would read if you were just browsing the news …
HOUSTON – A 23-month-old Texas toddler became the first confirmed swine flu death outside of Mexico as authorities around the world struggled to contain a growing global health menace that has also swept Germany onto the roster of afflicted nations. Officials say the death was in Houston.”
The next paragraph tells us the child actually came FROM MEXICO.
“… the child had traveled with family from Mexico to Brownsville in South Texas. The child became ill in Brownsville and was taken to a Houston hospital and died Monday night.”
Granted, they don’t say it was the first American death, as Jeff heard on the news this morning, but still.  Actually the headline says it is the first “US death”, which gives the impression that it was an American.
Oh they make me crazy.

You Are a Burger

You are a down to earth person and a straight shooter. You don’t fall for fads or trends.

You are stable and a bit old fashioned. Tradition and loyalty are important to you.

You are a good friend and you like to have a good time. You find it easy to kick back.

You’re not one to make waves in life. You’re happy just to be a part of the fun.

can you believe it?

today I was listening to the Michael Medved show while I worked.  Mr. Medved said that one of President Obama’s ideas for fixing taxes is to have the governmetn do your taxes for you.  If you made income from a single job, had a single bank account and soemthing else, the government would fill out your tax forms for you.

While I see that this probably won’t help that many people (seriously, who makes income from one job only and doesn’t have any extra stuff?  Medved said it was aobut 40% of Americans), the idea of it scares me.  The more I think about it, the more I really do wish that we paid all our own taxes.  I lean toward the thinking that a person should know where their money is going.  And, if they see where it is going and how much of it is going, they would be more vested in making sure it is spent wisely.
This way of thinking came about as I saw how much the government takes from people with the payroll tax.

Juan is outraged …

well, okay, Juan Williams doesn’t really get “outraged”, but he is angry.  I can see why.

http://foxforum.blogs.foxnews.com/2009/04/20/williams_obama_dc/

With our kids in CVA, school vouchers and other improvements to public school education seem more important to me.  Perhaps it’s personal, I don’t want to lose the money being given my children – we’ve been able to do better homeschooling since we joined CVA.  I can’t imagine being in a district where the schools are so horrible as they are in D.C.  Here in Tacoma, we have bad schools, but there are a few good ones mixed in.  And I don’t see race playing a role in the children’s education like it does in D.C.
I understand that the NEA doesn’t want to change things because that would mean admitting they have been failing.  However, it’s not just their pride that is at stake!  It’s our kids’ ability to function in the world.  How are they going to make it when our education system is so poor?  Japan, India, even China, I think, have better schools and their kids score higher on stuff than ours.
Maybe that’s the plan.  President Obama said it wasn’t fair for America to be so big & strong.  By undermining our education system, he is ensuring that we will no longer be big & strong because we’ll all be stupid.

Update & Neat site

Haven’t blogged in a while.  Realized I should be writing down all the neat things the kids are doing. Jonathan received his yellow belt in jujutsu.  🙂  He’s doing very well, his Sensei says.  Daniel watched Jonathan’s test for yellow belt and decided he wanted to do jujutsu instead of gymnastics at the Y.  Daniel wants to learn how to flip.  🙂

We joined the Y finally.  Hoping CVA will cover most of the cost.  Now to get the kids signed up for all the things they want to do!  Jeff has already started exercising … I need to get off my butt and do something too!
Today was really busy!  We had church, then fellowship, then lunch with friends, then a visit with friends … then Daniel had his intro lesson for jujutsu … while he & Jonathan were there, Nicholas, Jeff and I went and got tomato plants, cucumber starts, and bean seeds from Tacoma Boys & soil from a friend … then we came home and Nicholas and I went for a walk.  We were going to try and make it to Garfield Park, but it was getting pretty late by the time we were almost there, so we had to turn around and come home.  I didn’t want to be out in the dark.  So tomorrow we will take the big boys with us and go to the park.  🙂
When I came home, I found a new (to me) site – map my run.  You can click here to see where we walked.

funny story

A minister was completing a temperance sermon.
With great emphasis he said,
“If I had all the beer in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river.”

With even greater emphasis he said,
“And if I had all the wine in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river.”

And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he said,
“And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river.”

Sermon complete, he sat down.

The song leader stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, nearly laughing,
“For our closing song, let us sing Hymn #365, ‘Shall We Gather at the River’.”
