Deep Thought

My devotions this morning –

“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” Genesis 3:6

Satan gets us to concentrate on the temptation instead of God. ~ Gladys M. Hunt

I found that statement to be deep. Just now, as I was typing the verse in, I realized something else. I always thought that Eve was alone – that she took the fruit back to Adam and talked him into eating it. But here it says her husband was with her. So that whole “Eve did it” argument is moot!! He was right there – he could have stopped her. Another reason the second Adam had to come. 🙂 I’m so glad He did!!

** just a note – Jeff said that Adam wasn’t “right there with her”, but that when they said “with her” they meant “around” or because they were married. So ignore my whole schpeel about Adam being with her when she took the fruit.

15 years

Fifteen years ago I was single.  It was my last night of being single.  Everything was ready for our wedding, and I even got to see Jeff after his “bachelor party” (he and his friends went and played darts, I think).
I was 20, Jeff would turn 26 in two days.
Everything was good.  Our wedding was wonderful (except for the stuff with the marriage license), everything was perfect.  I couldn’t believe we were actually doing this monumental thing.  Still in shock over Jeff’s desire to always be with me, I failed to look around me and enjoy all the day had to offer.
Although now, I would say that day did not matter so much as today does.  Yes, we made a vow.  But the everyday living shows what a marriage is really made of.  Saying “I do” doesn’t mean as much as doing the dishes, communicating clearly, watching out for each other & learning how to best love the person you’re committed to.
15 years have taught me that I am very lucky.  Somehow I got the cream of the crop.  I used to think I wanted Prince Humperdink (well, more knight-in-shining-armour than Prince H, but you get the idea) but found out that my Farm Boy was a Knight in shining armour in disguise!!
How do you verbalize the love that has gone into 15 years of marriage?  How do you express the comfortable feeling of being taken care just the way you need?  How do you put into words all the little things (like teaching me to cook, helping me be more tactful & less judgemental, showing me every day how he loves me) that make up 15 years of marriage?
We have grown together.  We have loved, lost, been up, been down, rejoiced and sorrowed.  15 years of marriage was not without its bumps, but thankfully God is a master artist and He has created something even more beautiful out of our lives.
15 years ago I did not understand the true meaning of best friend.  Tomorrow I look forward to 15+ more years of discovering more of who he is.

From family trip 7-09

I absolutely love the ocean. Water calms me, refreshes me, and inspires me. Thought I’d share this photo with you. Taken on Dungeness Bay in Sequim (pronounced SQWIM), WA last July. The land you see in the photo is the spit.

do you believe in soul mates?

Jeff and I were listening to Michael Medved, and sadly, eventually, we had to turn it off. Medved had on an author who wrote a book called “Marry Him”. The book was encouraging women to not overlook “regular” guys, and thus miss their soul mate. The woman who wrote the book is 43 and unmarried. She said she’d found someone really great, but due to some “family issues” he had to move away and so they weren’t together anymore. In my opinion, one should only give advice about what one knows. (Now I know in the past, I have given unwanted and unrequested advice, but it was on things I knew! 😉 ) I think I would rather read a book on marriage or on finding the right person by someone who has been successful at finding someone, getting married and staying married.
The problem is, marriage isn’t easy. One has to choose to love sometimes. One has to die to oneself sometimes … don’t get me wrong, being married is a lot of fun. Being married is a lot of work, too.
I think we’ve been inundated with Hollywood’s image of marriage, and we forget that it’s not easy. We think it should be smooth, simple and uncomplicated. This is silly thinking because people are complicated, rough, and usually fairly complex. Marriage brings two of these beings together, and causes them to live together, work together, entwine their lives with each other. Why should this be easy? Does it really matter if the two people are soul mates or not? You tell me.

Anyways … on a semi-related note –
Valentine’s Day always reminds me of what marriage is. Jeff asked me to marry him 15 years ago on Valentine’s Day. Since then, we’ve had quite a few different Valentine’s days – from dinner out to a picnic in the living room. This year, for Valentine’s Day we invited one of the boys’ friends over and hung out in the living room. I gave Jeff and the boys valentine cards, the boys gave us cards … that was the extent of our day. Granted, we weren’t feeling the greatest, as we were still getting over being sick, but that’s not really why we didn’t do anything. We honestly couldn’t think of anything to do! We didn’t want to see any of the movies that were out, we didn’t feel like eating out, and we didn’t want to spend the money on an overnight trip anywhere. I think we’ve become an old married couple!! (I kept thinking of Mr. Elton in “Pride & Prejudice” on Sunday!)
